EQUALITY NoVa, the Northern Virginia grassroots membership organization dedicated to improving the quality of life and meeting the needs of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, or questioning (LGBTQ) community and our allies., stands firmly and unapologetically with our Transgender community.


We are one community, united in diversity and we reaffirm that our Trans siblings are us, and we are them.


In today’s political climate, much is said about transgender visibility and transgender care. Let us be unequivocal in our commitment:

  • Being Trans is not a political issue.

  • Being Trans is not a “lifestyle.”

  • Being Trans is a natural and beautiful part of humanity, as intrinsic to the human family as any other expression of identity.


What is "not natural" are the divisions and labels imposed upon people who are simply trying to live freely and authentically as consenting, autonomous adults.


At EQUALITY NoVa, we remain steadfast in our mission to affirm dignity, respect, and truth which are all values that support the Pursuit of Happiness for all Americans.


Where We Stand:

  • It is not a debate. Being Trans is a natural state of being and part of human diversity.

  • Trans people deserve respect, safety, and dignity, just as every person in this nation deserves.

  • Regarding Trans youth:

    • We affirm the rights and responsibilities of parents to care for their children with compassion, open dialogue, and trusted professional support.

    • These conversations, between parents, children, and caring experts, must happen in an atmosphere of respect and affirmation.

    • Core truths we uphold:

      • Being Trans is not a disease nor a disorder.

      • Being Trans is not a passing phase or something that just “goes away.”

      • Being Trans is not something to be “converted” or “fixed.”

      • It is okay and beautiful to be Trans. Every Trans person deserves love, safety, and full legal protection.


At EQUALITY NoVa, our commitment is unwavering: We will always stand with our Trans community; today, tomorrow, and every day forward.
