Transgender Discussion at Fairlington United Methodist Church

On Sunday, June 14, Equality NoVA Board Member Helen Snyder was honored to speak with the congregation at Fairlington United Methodist Church about the experiences of transgender individuals and the unique challenges they often face within communities of faith. The discussion created an opportunity for open dialogue, education, and reflection on how faith communities can continue building spaces where every person is welcomed with dignity, compassion, and respect. Inclusive communities thrive when people are affirmed for who they are and treated with the respect every person deserves.

Helen was joined by fellow Equality NoVA Board members, members of the Equality NoVA Book Club, and supporters from across Northern Virginia, whose presence reflected the organization's ongoing commitment to standing alongside transgender and non-binary people and fostering a more inclusive community for everyone.

Fairlington United Methodist Church demonstrated its longstanding commitment to LGBTQ+ inclusion throughout the day. A vibrant rainbow shawl draped over the sanctuary's cross served as a visible symbol of welcome, while many congregants wore matching rainbow shawls during the service to express their solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community. Equality NoVA extends its sincere appreciation to Darrel Eddingfield and Mark Elder for organizing this meaningful event and to the congregation for creating a space where thoughtful conversation, compassion, and understanding could flourish.
